SciPy is a community dedicated to the advancement of scientific computing through open source Python software. Many members of the organizing committee are deeply troubled by recent events relating to Texas.
We can promise to work to make SciPy a “harassment-free conference experience for everyone, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, ethnicity, or religion.” However, we recognize that keeping this promise is challenged by the simple fact of holding the conference in Texas.
For 2022, SciPy will take place in-person in Austin, with a virtual option. Canceling the meeting or moving it entirely online is not a viable option at this point. It would be financially ruinous to the conference and would be unfair to the hundreds of people who made plans to travel to Austin.
While we have contractual obligations for 2023, we are already engaged in discussions about relocating future meetings to better serve and protect the community and we’ll continue these discussions during and after the conference.
For those who decide not to come to Austin, please email us to request a virtual ticket.
We look forward to greeting you, in-person and online, to share in informative and educational opportunities at this year’s SciPy conference.
